Which way is up

What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Which Way is Up?

Dec. 14, 2023
Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: Which way is up?

The “bubble cover” installed on the box for this GFCI receptacle needs to be kept closed to keep the GFCI receptacle protected from the elements. Unfortunately, the person who installed this cover never took the time to pry out the slots where the cords are supposed to lay so the cover can be closed. It is impossible to close this cover while the cords are plugged in! For receptacles rated 15A or 20A, 125V or 250V installed in a wet location, Sec. 406.9(B)(1) requires an enclosure that is weatherproof whether or not the attachment plug cap is inserted. If an outlet box hood is used for this purpose, it must be listed, and must be identified as an extra-duty type. The GFCI receptacle installed here was also not a weather-resistant type as required by Sec. 406.9(B)(1) either.
